I've been inspired by a lot of people's armies over the years, but this time, it was hyv3mynd at Synaps3. He's currently using an 1850 Dark Eldar list that seems like a lot of fun, focusing on our foot elements, and he includes Maugan Ra for his allied HQ. I'll let you visit his site and read his battle reports to get a good look at how it works, but it mainly takes advantage of him giving Fearless to any one of our otherwise low-leadership units (Grots and Beasts in particular).
I was really impressed with it, and thought I'd give Maugan a try sometime for myself. I like to proxy a lot when I try out units. However, when I use HQs, especially special characters, I like to get my hands dirty and put together a suitable model that is distinctly unique.
Since I don't have the money to shell out for a finecast, authentic Maugan Ra model, I'm stuck with working what I have.
Behold:
It is a fairly basic conversion. I took an Incubi that I was going to use for a Drazhar conversion and then scrapped, added a Dark Lance to him, and put a hell glaive blade on the end to signify the Executioner. Since I have plenty of spare Dark Lances and hell glaives, it was really no issue. The head is actually going to be swapped with the head from the Archon pictured below. I just haven't had a chance to go digging for it:
I still have to figure out what to put on his back. Normally Incubi have large trophy racks that spout from the back plate. I really don't want to make him look simply like an Incubi with a Dark Lance, so I'm thinking about putting an extra Phantasm Grenade Launcher from the Hellion kit on his back, to represent a power source for his suit and to not draw too much attention/comparison:
The other issue I run into is the left hand. It is just sitting there in a fist. I think it is okay, as he is just finishing a cleaving blow, and simply let go to get a lot more reach. If I put something there, it wouldn't make sense (as the Maugetar is two-handed, he should have nothing else in either hand).
I'm really wondering if it would look too weird though painted.
Thoughts?
